Texas DWI Ignition Interlock Device

Free Austin DWI Online Case ConsultationImagine if, every time you wanted to drive somewhere, you had to take a breathalyzer before the car would start. Sounds pretty annoying, right? In the state of Texas, this scenario is quite likely if you are found guilty of driving while intoxicated (DWI) and are ordered to have an ignition interlock device installed in your vehicle.

If your driver’s license has been suspended for any reason in the past, or if you have a prior DWI conviction on your record, your sentence will most likely include an ignition interlock device. Also known as an IID, this device measures your blood alcohol content (BAC) any time you attempt to start your vehicle.

Texas DWI Ignition Interlock DeviceYou will need to visit an ignition interlock device service center to have the device installed in your vehicle. Expect to pay anywhere from $50 to $200 for the installation, as well as $50 to $100 in rental fees each month. You will also be responsible for any required maintenance and/or calibration.

Once installed, you will be required to blow into the device and successfully pass a breath test before your car can start. In order to prevent other individuals from blowing into the device, you will also have to perform several random breath tests while you are driving—usually every 20 minutes or so.

If the device measures a BAC of .05% or more, an alarm will sound, and the incident will be recorded on the device’s memory. Any tampering or attempts to disengage the IID will also be noted, and can lead to more penalties.

In addition to installing an ignition interlock device in your vehicle, your sentence may include license suspension, hefty fees and even jail time. Once you serve your sentence, your insurance rates are also sure to skyrocket, and the conviction will remain on your driving record forever.

As you can see, the penalties for DWI are quite severe. That’s why it is important to speak with an attorney if you have recently been arrested for DWI in Texas. With the right legal representation, the charges against you can often be reduced or even dropped completely.
